Observation Questions

  1. What repeated words or ideas do you notice in this passage?

Interpretation Questions

  1. One of the main themes of James deals with “good works”. How does “wisdom” and “good works” relate?
  2. There are two types of wisdoms being contrasted in this passage.  How are each characterized?
  3. According to this passage, what things create quarrels and conflicts? What things promote peace between believers?
  4. What does James mean by v. 3, “you ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.”?

Application Question

  1. Having learned “wisdom from above” in what ways (areas) can you grow? i.e. grow in yielding others and their ideas or grow in loving peace.
  2. Are you currently in conflict with any other believer? What can you do this week to reconcile with this person?

Reflection Question

  1. In your prayers, what kind of wisdom are you asking God for? Does it fall in line with the “wisdom from above” described by James? (Marked by humility and good works? Or understanding for trials and suffering?)
