Children and Parents

“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise

Ephesians 6:2-3 NIV

This Sunday was International Father’s Day and a good reminder that honoring our earthly parents is important and what the Bible commands us to do. God commands that children obey and show respect to their parents and that parents behave towards their children in a way that is worthy of receiving honor. These commands are life-long. Honoring our parents is also giving honor to our Father in Heaven. We are called to honor our parents not for what they have done but for who they are.

Let us this week reflect and pray on how we can honor our earthly parents and how we can honor and give thanks to our Heavenly Father for all he has done for us.

For those of us that are parents ourselves we can learn from God as an example of how to be a good parent. God is a perfect role model for us and the only perfect father in existence, demonstrating unconditional love, forgiveness, reliability, encouragement, comfort and compassion. Let us this week consider how we can more closely follow God’s example and behave as children and parents in a way that is pleasing to God and in a way that others can see Christ living in us!

May God bless you all in this week ahead and fill you with his Holy Spirit!
