Counter Culture Living

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

In a year like 2020, the words of Paul above are piercingly challenging.

Through the lenses of this world, there is little to rejoice and seemingly little to be thankful for. In fact, pain and suffering has been the prevailing narrative this year. And yet it’s in the midst of this, we are challenged to rejoice, pray, and give thanks in all circumstances. Paul did not write these commands from an ivory tower, in a detached philosophical perspective. He himself wrote
it, in the context of a church that was being politically persecuted for its faith, going through significant distress, in a city with upside down pagan moral values.

We as Christians know however, that Paul’s exhortation is not in any ways out of touch with reality, but in fact is full of true hope and great encouragement. As we set our eyes and convictions on the cross, we know that “this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (2 Corinthians 4:17).

The Christian DNA in us forces us to shift our focus from the seen to the unseen, not in an irresponsible and folly manner, but moving away from our fleshly natural instincts to an intentional focus on Christ. And when we do that, the rejoicing, the praying and the thanking in all circumstances is neither forced or unnatural, but simply a logical progression of our Christian identity and character. To the world, it’s foolishness… But we are countercultural in that way. Jesus was our first counter culture revolutionary. So was Paul and all the giants of faith before us.

Wishing everyone a victorious 2021!
