Cultivate The Divine Life

3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.  2 Peter 1:3-4

If you are like me, much of the time, I live far below where I know I am called to be and where I have been enabled to live.  My natural tendency is to revert to my sinful, old nature, default mode.  In this mode, I generally complain about life, or I think about how hard things are, and my mindset is such that I’m on my own to figure things out and to make things happen.

But all it takes is one moment of prayer and to remember the reality that is revealed in this passage and suddenly things begin to change.  If I believe that God has give us everything we need for a godly life, then it’s up to me to apprehend it and to embrace it and actualize it in my life, rather than living as if God doesn’t exist and as if I have to go it alone (of course I don’t believe the latter, but I often live like I do).

Further, it’s a beautiful thing that we’ve been invited to participate in the divine nature.  Read it again in v. 4.  Did you know that?  Someone once said, “The Son of God became the Son of Man so that the sons of men could become the sons of God.”  What God invites us into is so far above the level of what we’re used to…so much so, it’s actually hard to believe.  But if we would choose to accept and believe it, and then to actually live it, how much would things change in our personal lives and in this world?
