Fear Not

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”

Genesis 15:1

People are afraid of things threatened their security. My youngest daughter is afraid of darkness so she always asks me to leave her room door open when she goes to bed. Many of young people these days are afraid of the future. Everyone has fear of something that he or she believes that it is dangerous to threaten his or her security.

Genesis chapter 15 starts with “After these things.” Earlier chapter 14, it describes that how Abram rescued his nephew Lot out of hands of the alliance of kings. The battle Abram was willingly engaged was very risky. Because he had only 318 men to fight against not a single king but four kings. It is easy to imagine that those victorious four kings would have had many more than 318.

However, after he defeated the kings, rescued Lot, he refused the offer the king of Sodom gave by faith and he became to realize the fact that he’s just a foreigner, surrounded by evil and still childless. That means that there’s no future.“After these things” Abram was afraid of the reality that had no security in his life

“Fear not” the command God gave to Abram is very clear. You don’t have to be afraid of anything because God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and love and self-discipline (1 Timothy 1:7) He is “your shield.” Wherever you go whatever you do you will be perfectly protected by the everlasting father. The Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one (2 Thessalonians 3:3)  “Your reward shall be very great” What can we ask for more than Jesus? He is our great reward. He is all sufficient.

Are you afraid of something? Fear not, God is your shield and your great reward.
