Fully Trust in God

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

As believers, we are to put our trust in God alone. Not a doctrine, not righteous living or deeds, not the goodness of human nature; not fair weather; not blessings, gifts and talents, honor and recognition, or prosperity. We are surrounded and tempted to be swayed by all of these influences, but God is the only one where our trust is correctly placed. He is our refuge and our protection for the journey.

Although it’s natural, if we are discouraged by our circumstances, sadly we have probably hoped and trusted in something other than Him. It’s a hard lesson that God will deliver us in the midst of the hardship of this fallen world and fallen people around us (including our own fallenness of heart), and not from these things. Not clear skies, but peace in the storm is the promise. Not smooth sailing, but ability to reach His ordained destination despite the storm that batters. Not an easy journey, but encouragement enough to stay on His path, narrow and untraveled though it may be.

If His calling is in your heart, don’t sway to the worries of human counsel. Stay His course and you will find Him the dearest Friend. But remember your steps belong to Him, and not yourself. In your prayer and devotional life stay close and regularly in His word, so you are able to test that you pursue His will and not a worldly goal that seems spiritual but is counterfeit. Hardship and trial are not the markers of being on His way, nor are ease and prosperity. Both can come – in and out of His will.

Don’t place your trust in reaching a specific waypoint or following the map, but in the person of the Lord. Many biblical figures of faith show that great victories can come on what seems like a detour or dead end. The Lord alone will compel you, create the path and the opportunities, and guide you according to His love. He is faithful to those who fully, recklessly trust in Him.

So what is challenging your trust in God recently? What step can you take this week to overcome that fear and put your hand in His, moving forward in full trust, declaring He alone is your Lord?

In you, LORD my God, I put my trust. I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause. Show me your ways, LORD, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Psalm 25:15 (NIV)
