Get to Steppin’!

Every day when we leave our 2nd floor villa apartment, my 3-year-old son will say he is going to walk down the 30 steep and uneven cobblestone stairs “by myself”, as he puts it. Now, I am all in for supporting my oft independent toddler in his “by myself” endeavors, but I can’t let it happen quite yet. Even in his attempted followup of assurance that he’ll be “careful”, I still cannot maintain the confidence that there won’t be a misstep that might bear unfortunate results.

Because…being careful in dangerous places is still dangerous.

In a world full of brokenness, corruption, perversion, and temptation, it is not enough for us to “be careful”. The Accuser is prowling and waiting for our own missteps at every opportunity to devour his prey, and we may want to avoid the world all together for our own safety and protection.

However, playing it safe isn’t what we are called by the Father to do in life. To live a life of obedience with the gospel, we need to get out there in that world that Jesus came to die for and do radical and counter-cultural things for the Kingdom’s sake.

So, instead of taking my youngest son at his word [and poor track record!], I take his hand and support him as he takes those big and necessary steps. I learned that from my heavenly Father in Psalm 139:8-10. When the psalmist tells of the inescapable Spirit of God even in the extreme distances of the world, he says, “even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

Friends, the key here is not to simply be careful, stay clear of difficult things, or go at it in our own pace and way. Rather, we need to enter the challenging and even sometimes dangerous places with the guiding hand of our Father, which holds us fast.

And in the midst of said places we are led to for the sake of the gospel, heed the words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 16:13. “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong” for the God in heaven is the same God who directs and holds us with every single step. So get to steppin’!
