Going for Gold!

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. – 2 Timothy 4:7-8

I just got done preaching 4 weeks through the book of 2 Timothy, and I’m now going on a short summer break for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, because the whole country looks like it’s going into higher degrees of lockdown, there’s really nowhere for me to go, so I’m thinking about just sitting at home with the AC on and watching 2 weeks of the Olympics.

As a kid I always dreamed of competing in the Olympics. I think I always wanted to run the 100 and 200 meter dash races. But at 46, I’m way past the age of being able to compete, but I can still dream. So, I dream that maybe one day I’ll compete in Olympic curling, that is, if my back can hold up to all the brushing. On second thought, most likely not.

But even though I am not an Olympic athlete, I’m still running a race. And it’s a race to eternity. There are many hurdles and obstacles in life along the way that try to block our path. In the book of 2 Timothy, it’s stuff like the sinfulness of man, false teachings, false teachers in the church, the hardships of life, etc. And yet, Paul encourages all of us to keep running that race, and to run it strong until the end.

I may never win an Olympic gold medal. But, I know there is a crown of righteousness that’s waiting for me one day. It’s waiting for all of us who faithfully continue to wait on the Lord. So, whatever obstacles may be getting in your way this week, let’s look to Jesus and let’s keep fighting the good fight, let’s keep running the race, and let’s keep the faith. And at the end of the race, I am certain that we will receive a reward that is very much worth it.
