He Calls My Name

1 Samuel  3:1-10

1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. 2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. 3The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.     4 Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” 5 and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6 And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy.   9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”

PyeongChang 2018 Olympic is over now. During the fifteen days of PyeongChang Olympic, many new stars were born. Among all the Korean athletes who were participated in PyeongChang Olympic, women’s curling team has become one of the most popular teams in Korea even after losing out on gold. At the beginning of this Olympic, the team was not highlighted because the players of the team were not evaluated as medalists. However, after they beat top-ranked teams one by one, Koreans started paying attention to the team and have become huge fans of them. People were attracted to the team not because they beat the strong teams but also the unique language the skip, Kim, Eun-Jung used during the match. Almost every ends, after she let go of the stone, she yelled “Young-mi, Young-mi Young-mi” at the lead sweeper, as a sign of direction to sweep. As Young-mi, the lead sweeper received the sign “Young-mi” from the skip, she instantly swept slowly or fast depending on the calling levels of urgency.

1 Samuel 1:1-10 says that God called Samuel to fulfill his purpose. In order to invite Samuel for his glorious ministry, God didn’t call him just one time but multiple times until Samuel recognized His calling. And his calling was clear and direct, for Samuel had no doubt that someone’s calling his name. After the process of discerning, Samuel recognized God’s calling to him and he responded him saying “Speak, for your servant hears.”

God calls us to take part in his kingdom work. Not because he needs to use us but because he loves us so much to give us the opportunity to taste the harmony of Triune God. How do you respond to his calling today?

Have a wonderful week!
