He Hears My Voice

”But it is a dangerous error, surely very widespread among Christians, to think that the heart can pray by itself. For then we confuse wishes, hopes, sighs, laments, rejoicings–all of which the heart can do by itself–with prayer. And we confuse earth and heaven, man and God. Prayer does not mean simply to pour out one’s heart. It means rather to find the way to God and to speak with him, whether the heart is full or empty. No man can do that by himself. For that he needs Jesus Christ.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible

This past year as our church has been focusing on spiritual disciplines I have been led to re-evaluate my walk with God and the spiritual disciplines I’ve been practicing. I recently spoke on WNS about how I recently realized that often my pursuit of God had been self-motivated, which meant that my walk with God was too often affected by how I was feeling or doing rather than by God Himself. If I had nothing left to ask for or nothing else to share with Him or if praying and reading the Bible didn’t leave me feeling fulfilled, I wouldn’t do it, which only led me to commit less and less time with God or ups and downs of periods of committed devotion and periods of none.  Since I didn’t “feel” like He was listening or I didn’t “feel” like it mattered, I would stop praying.

But how wrong was I?  As if the way I feel changes whether God is present or not.  Psalm 116:1-2 says,

“I love the Lord because he hears my voice

   and my prayer for mercy.

2 Because he bends down to listen,

I will pray as long as I have breath!”

Can you imagine our heavenly Father inclining His ear towards us to hear what we have to say?  It’s a powerful image. It is this image that should press us on to pray and as Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, “find the way to God and to speak to him, whether the heart is full or empty.”

So here are some topics you can pray about:

  1. Jubilee’s church plant, King’s Cross
  2. People in your Life Group, friends, and family
  3. The greater city of Seoul

May you be encouraged to pray daily to our Father not because of how you’re feeling but because He hears our voice.  God Bless!
