Healing and Hope

Psalm 34:18- The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

I had an idea planned for this devotion. It being the Lunar New Year holiday weekend. I thought it would be good to write something related to the significance of the moon in our lives. But then I woke up this morning to hear news of the passing of Kobe Bryant and I haven’t been able to get it off my mind all day so I decided to write about this instead.

For those that might not know, Kobe Bryant was a living basketball legend. He grew up close to where I did in the suburbs of Philadelphia to be drafted right out of high school into the National Basketball Association. Through a draft night trade he ended up on the Los Angeles Lakers and from that point on, it was sports history in the making right before the eyes of all the world. Kobe Bryant finished his basketball career as a 5 time NBA Champions with too many individual accomplishments to list here. But in one moment due to a helicopter crash, his life, along with that of his 13 year old daughter the 2nd of four), and 7 others were taken…..

Now, there recently have been other deaths of other public figures that I admired but for some reason, this one has affected me more than the others. Perhaps it’s because of how great of a sportsman Kobe was, perhaps it’s also because he’s a hometown hero. I’m sure the suddenness of things is a factor, as well as how young he was and of course, his daughter being with him.

But whatever the reason(s), even though I didn’t know Kobe in any personal way, I really do grieve his passing and my heart truly aches for his surviving family. And in such, I wanted to use this opportunity to simply pray for the healing and the hope declared in Psalm 34:18 over Kobe Bryant’s family as well as the families who also lost their loved ones, in this time of great loss and need.

And for those of us that are experiencing hardships similar to that of the families involved in this great tragedy, may this verse also fill you with the healing and hope that only this truth of the nearness of God can bring.
