I Lift Up My Eyes

Psalm 121 :1-6

I lift up my eyes to the hills– where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

Recently I have been processing about how difficult for humans to accept unsolvable problems. Even when issues are big, as long as we know there is a solution, we can direct our focus and move forward. Without vision, people perish. It is challenging when our vision doesn’t include a solution.

With the current pandemic, we see many different responses to his pain and confusion. Now the majority of us have adjusted to the reality of this pandemic and about the fact that it might not go away as soon as we would like it to. However, if you think about the beginning of the pandemic we all probably recall the frustration of this situation not going away in a couple of weeks as we all hoped or believed. Even now, it seems that we are fighting the battle without vision because there is no solution yet.

In the bible, on the other hands, solving problems doesn’t seem to be the most important concept in life, in fact, it hinders us to really see what is the most important. Many asked Jesus for solution and when the wisdom of Jesus didn’t solve the problem, people got frustrated. He spoke as if, accepting the unsolvable issues is the beginning of godly life. The most issues that we face in life, in fact, are unsolvable. We have temporary solutions but death proceeds no matter how strongly we want to work against it. Injustice is always with us and what we can do is to decrease it but it continues to grow on and on. Even the things that we believe it’s solvable such as a virus with a vaccine or hunger with food to eat, we can’t deny the fact that it’s all temporary. As the people of God, we know the only solution to pain and death is choosing Jesus and following Him. He will rescue and heal us in a way that is so different from all the temporary solutions. He is the only Healer and Savior to all our suffering. While we are waiting and living our lives, today’s passage tells us how our attitudes should be. When we face mountains of life, our attitudes should not be powerlessness but to LIFE our eyes UP to the mountains and remind ourselves our help comes from the Lord. Lifting up eyes means lifting our focus up and face the scary, powerful looking mountains knowing that we have greater Help and it is on the way. Blessings.
