In the Boat

1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.  pl- Luke 5:1-3

We use the expression “in the same boat” most of the time in a negative way. Whenever we find ourselves in an unfavorable situation with other people, we are all “stuck in the same boat”. In today’s passage Peter found himself in the same boat with Jesus.

The four gospels each have different accounts of Jesus calling his disciples, but here in Luke we have something unique, where Jesus actually gets into Peter’s boat. Peter had no choice. Jesus decided he was coming into his life to change it forever.

Do we realize that this is what Jesus is doing for us? Whatever the situation you may be in your life, do you know that Jesus is stepping in whether you like it or not? We often think that we make a decision to get in the same boat with Jesus, but that’s not true. Jesus has already gotten into the boat with us, and that’s a wonderful thing.

Whatever you do this week, whatever situation you face,  I hope we call can see that Jesus is there pursuing us. Jesus is already in the boat, and he in fact is the one steering the boat. This week, I hope we can be encouraged and find peace in our Lord and celebrate that we are in the same boat with him.
