It’s All About Jesus

John 1:1-18
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 He was with God in the beginning.3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.15 (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”)16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

Many scholars believe this passage to be a poem, a beautifully crafted poem. Some believed it was a hymn that people of the early church sang.  Regardless of what it was, John beautifully introduces the major themes of his gospel through first 18 verses of his gospel.

As Christmas is fast approaching let me turn your attention to one of my favorite advent passages concerning Jesus.  Let the truth of this passage radically change the way we worship Jesus during this Advent season.  I have Four.

First v1 tells us that Jesus was with God from the very beginning.  All this time, for all of eternity Jesus was there with the Father.  You see Bethlehem was not Jesus’ first home but Jesus’ home was always with God.

Second v1 also tells us that Jesus was God.  This is the purpose of John’s gospel, John desires to show the true identity of Jesus the son of God.  In John’s gospel Jesus turns water into wine, He takes away the sin of the world, He heals the sick and He forgives sin.  He feeds a huge crowd with just two fish and five loaves of bread, He walks on water and He calms the sea.  He refers to Himself as the bread of life, the gate, the good shepherd, the resurrection, the way, the truth and the life.

Third v3 John says “all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.”  All things came into existence through Jesus.  When God said “let there be light,”  Jesus was there.  There was never a time when Jesus was not.  Jesus with the Father created all things and put this world into order.

Lastly v5,v12 and v17 tell us that Jesus overcame all sin, death and darkness.  God the son came to us as a man to reconcile our broken, disoriented, messy lives.  The law that was given through Moses revealed that you and I didn’t measure up and we needed another solution.  This is the good news, we are welcomed in because Jesus was rejected.  We are given great inheritance because Jesus gave up His great inheritance.  We are given a new life because Jesus gave up his own life.  He broke the chains of sin once and for all.  He took our death upon Himself and was victorious on that Easter Sunday.

I pray that our passage stirs greater passion and love for Jesus and others.

Merry Christmas everyone.
