Living is Christ!

“For me, living is Christ and dying is gain. Now if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful work for me; and I don’t know which one I should choose. I am pressured by both. I have the desire to depart and be with Christ–which is far better–but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your advancement and joy in the faith, so that, because of me, your confidence may grow in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.”

Philippians 1:21-26

As part of my Kingdom work with Footstool is to interact and encourage field workers in this region of the globe, I am always grounded and humbled when I get to hear their willingness to answer God’s call into unclear, uncomfortable, and unsafe spaces. I recently got to hear some of their cries of yearning for opportunities to move back into those spaces as soon as possible.

Most of us spend our time seeking clarity, comfort, and safety in our waking days when God is actually trying to speak to our hearts through the dreams we are given to make good of these days. We all know that Christ will return and make good on his word to make all things new, and so there is a sensible longing for us to rest in his glory forever in eternity. But like these field workers, Paul is setting this ultimate desire aside for the “advancement and joy in the faith” that would build the growth in Christ for those that are without.

Paul continues with this powerful statement in verse 27,

“Just one thing: live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.”

So may we be encouraged, persuaded, and empowered by the Holy Spirit so that our “living is Christ” and be worthy of his good news for those we have been called to enter their spaces (much like our loving Savior has done!) as well.
