Love Lessons on a Farm

“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?” [Romans 8:32]

About a month ago, Alana and I brought our kids to a small farm in northern Seoul. When we walked into the barn-like building, there were animals big and small, each in their own pens spread throughout. Upon paying at the main entrance, we were each given a tray with greens, carrots, hay, food pellets, and seed to hand-feed each of the farm creatures.

Since there were very few people there that day, it was pretty clear how hungry the chicks, hamsters, birds, squirrels, and goats were as they all came eagerly to us as we approached their respective areas. This fact, coupled with the lack of consideration for how many other animals still need to be fed after the current one, we ran out of food pretty quickly.

We hoped that the employee at the front desk would allow us to purchase more food, but when we got the response, it was not what I expected. The worker said, “Oh, the food is free…and you can have as much as you want to give out.” Not long after this, I was following my 4-year-old around as he was singing a cheery melody, making his rounds, dropping some food into every single pen to every single animal on that farm.

Our intent for our children that day was to make a nice, interactive family memory with them. But, it didn’t take long for me to get the biggest blessing from that farm visit. As I followed closer to hear what it was my younger boy was singing, this is what I heard:

Jesus You died upon a cross,

And rose again to save the lost,

Forgive me now of all my sin,

Come be my Savior, Lord and Friend

Change my life and make it new,

And help me Lord, to live for You

Change my life and make it new,

And help me Lord, to live for You.

Wow! That’s when it hit me hard. The gospel was moving powerfully through that barn as he sang that song of love, gave this free gift to all, and gathered it all from an endless supply of that nourishment.

May we remember, even in the simplest and most innocent of moments of life, that God is present, singing a song of love over every one of us. And with that song, He is reminding us that His love pours out endless blessings to satisfy our souls.
