More To Life

This year, marks my 17th year in Korea.  I think for most foreigners, they never intended to stay this long, but I guess this is where the phrase “The Lord moves in mysterious ways” comes in to play?

Back when I arrived in 2002, a Christian/Pop artist named Staccie Orrico released as song called There’s Gotta Be More To This Life.  The chorus reads…

There’s gotta be more to life

Than chasing down every temporary high to satisfy me

‘Cause the more that I’m

Tripping out thinking there must be more to life

Well it’s life, but I’m sure, there’s gotta be more

Than wanting more

The lyrics are pretty straight forward, but as I have recently heard this song again, it struck me in a different way.  After 17 amazing years here in Korea, I am now preparing to transition my family on a new adventure.

This past April, the Lord opened an opportunity for our family to embark on a new journey to Singapore.  It’s something we certainly didn’t plan on.  Life in Korea has been very kind to us.  It is where we started our married life.  It is where we raised a family.  It is where we grew professionally, emotionally, and spiritually.  It is where our family lives and where we have an amazing community.  So why would we fix what isn’t broken?

Isaiah 55: 8-9

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord.  As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

You see?

The Lord has more in store than what you have in mind.  (mind if I say that again?)

The Lord has more in store than what you have in mind!

When Zacchaeus woke up that one particular morning, his only agenda for the day was to brush his teeth and man his post as a tax collector.  He had no intention of climbing a tree let alone host the Savior as his dinner guest!

When the lady at the well set out at high noon to draw water from the local well, her plans were to do just that!  Drawing water during the hottest time of the day, she was hoping to steer clear of everyone…especially the Son of God!

When the disciple Andrew called on his brother Peter to meet the One they called “Jesus,” Peter would have never forecasted the historic 2-year odyssey that was ahead.

The Lord has more in store than what you have in mind!

…and aren’t we thankful for it?

Back in March, I would have never imagined uprooting my family so late in the year to move to an entirely different country.  Our plans were to stay in Korea while continually living a “comfortable” life.  But His plans were different.

I am thankful that the Lord has opened this door to work in Singapore at one of the best international schools.  We are very fortunate and blessed for this opportunity.

There is truly “more to this life” and to understand these lyrics is to understand Isaiah 55.

I am unclear as to what our lives in Singapore will have in store, but I trust in the unquestionable knowledge and the unyielding power of our Lord.
