Never Abandoned

“When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”

“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” – Judges 6:12-13

Have you ever had a time in your life where you looked around at your first circumstances and concluded that God had abandoned you? That is exactly what happened with Gideon.

Israel had been conquered and oppressed by Midian. For 7 years, midian raided and ravaged Israel. Gideon looks at the situation and concludes that God has abandoned Israel. Incredibly, even in the presence of an angelic visit, Gideon chooses to blame God for abandoning them. In fact, the book of Judges tells us that it was Israel that abandoned God by worshipping other idols, and not the other way around. God had not abandoned Israel, and was about to use Gideon to help liberate Israel from Midian.

In our own lives there are times when it can seem like God has abandoned us. However, Jesus has promised that he will always be with us (Matthew 28:20). We can look at our circumstances and situations and conclude that God is absent. Or, we can trust His word and His character, that he will never leave us, and that He is always at work, even in the darkest times.
