New Wineskin for New Wine

No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.  Luke 5:38

As an elder at Jubilee, one of my duties is to lead a newcomer’s orientation after Sunday’s service. We usually have a group of newcomers ranging anywhere between 3 to 10 people, from all parts of the world. As I go through introducing our church, I make a point that Jubilee is a very transient church, with an average attendant staying in Korea (and in Jubilee) for about 3 years. There is a sub group of people (usually the leadership) who stay a little longer for about 6 to 7 years. Over the past 16 years of Jubilee’s history, we have been blessed with literally thousands of people who have called Jubilee their home through those cycles.

As we close 2022, we have seen a conversion of departures of the 3-year and 6-year attendants, where we have said goodbye to many friends who have been with us for about 3 years, but also some of the longer veterans who have seen their chapter at Jubilee come to close, as they go back to their respective countries to start a new chapter of their lives.

I mention all this because, while we are saddened to see friends leave, we have learned to embrace this transient DNA of Jubilee. It’s like a river of fresh water constantly flowing, and we are ready to embrace the new divine appointments that God is bringing to Jubilee in this new season. Though we don’t know yet what God is preparing for us, we remain prayerful and faithful, trusting that there is “new wine” ahead of us, and just like a new wineskin is required for the new wine, we trust that this changing of guard for Jubilee is a necessary condition for what God is preparing for us.

If you are a Jubilarian who has just joined our church, or have been with us for a year or so, I invite you to be excited for what God has in store for us. It’s a new church… almost literally. Embrace this community and take ownership of Jubilee at this junction, and let’s together with great anticipation, join in the new things that God is doing in our midst.

Have a great week everyone,
