No Escape From the World

“As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.”

John 17:18

(Devotion from Seize the Day with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, by Charles Ringma)

“There is no place to which the Christian can withdraw from the world, whether it be outwardly or in the sphere of the inner life. Any attempt to escape from the world must sooner or later be paid for with a sinful surrender to the world.”        –ETHICS

To withdraw from the world in order to remain pure and holy is a distortion of the meaning of holiness. For holiness has to do with turning toward God in the midst of the world, not separation from the world in order to find God. Moreover, withdrawal from the world always results in the startling discovery that the world is still very much with us, albeit in a different form. Escape is never a solution. Only the power of God keeping us in the midst of life provide the way for us to live.

Meditation

The safest place is not so much where we are but who is keeping us.

Blessings.
