Out of the Depths

He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. (‭Psalm‬ ‭18‬:‭16-19‬ ESV)

For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. (‭Psalm‬ ‭18‬:‭29‬ ESV)

When we feel most limited in this world, He proves Himself to be limitless. When we feel most helpless, He is our stronghold. When we are surrounded by many waters, Jesus Christ is our support, the Rock on which we stand.

The imagery used by David in these psalms is incredible. He feels as though he is drowning, and The Lord is his salvation. He is brought into a broad place, as though he had been surrounded on every side, made to feel like he was being suffocated. What a feeling, to go from claustrophobia to complete liberty! This idea is strengthened when David says that by Him, he feels as though he can leap over a wall!

Jesus Christ is the One who sets us free in this way. We are drowning in sin, surrounded on every side and even stuffed full of it, walled in with no hope of escape. But thanks be to God — He saw fit to send His Son that we might live! He drew us up from under the waters, put us in a broad place and helped us to vault over the wall, that we might experience true freedom in Him.

If you’ve been feeling suffocated and claustrophobic from the troubles of this world, or if you have been struggling with repetitive patterns of sin, it’s time to call upon His name and be saved! He is faithful and true to lift you up from the depths.

Praise the Lamb forever and ever! May you live in the truth of His promises. Amen.
