Refusing Words of a Whisper

Proverbs 18:6-8

“A fool’s lips walk into a fight, and his mouth invites a beating.

A fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body”

“Many things that we feel or think are often better left unsaid”, isn’t that the truth! I was challenged by this thought while meditating through Proverbs 18 today. I will be the first to admit there is something so enticing and mysteriously appealing about gossip (the words of a whisper). When you have heard big news, breaking news, something so secret you can’t wait to tell someone…there is such a glorious satisfaction in discussing and sharing about it.

Deep down we all know that it is wrong but why do we constantly fail to heed the warnings of this Proverb? What is even
scarier is that sometimes we mask gossip and slander behind prayer requests or think its okay because the information we want to share is true.

The truth is that gossip destroys. It destroys our relationships with each other and dissolves the unity in the body of Christ.
Surely it doesn’t bring honor or glory to God, the thing that we strive for as Christians. Gossip allows pride to grow in our hearts as we forget humility and grace.

Lets pray, repent and actively refuse gossip in our lives this week. Looking to the gospel and being reminded of who we are and how at the cross Jesus bears all of our sins, even gossip. That Jesus comes to reconcile and redeem, and pours out grace to us all. Instead of gossip let us use our tongues to worship God and to love one another.
