A Royal Priesthood

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

As a part of a small group leader’s training that I conducted in the past, one of the exercises for the leaders was to write down the qualities that they would want in their pastor. Assigned to this task, those being trained would start diligently writing, without hesitation.

After a bit of time, I would ask them what they had written down and when I did, they would start sharing, with passion in fact, the qualities that they had come up with that they would want in their pastor; “Kind,” “A people person,” “Knows the Bible,” “A servant,” “A good listener,” “Compassionate,” “Generous,” “Faithful,” “Caring,” “Bold,” “Fearless for Jesus,” etc.

And if I were to ask you now, to do the same thing, I’m sure your list would be similar to the ones that the small group leaders had come up with, no?

Well, the point of this exercise for them, and as well as for us now, is in making the connection that the qualities that they and you would want in your pastor are the same qualities that they themselves, and you yourself need to have as well!!

For you see, as stated in our verse, 1 Peter 2:9, ALL Christians are called by the Lord to be His Royal Priesthood to declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness and into his wonderful light! So that means that no matter the context, whether you are in vocational ministry or not, whether you are a small group leader or not, if you call yourself a follower of Christ, KNOW that you have been ordained by the Lord to be His royal priest, to be those that represent Him accurately, lovingly, and boldly to all the world!

In such, it is ABSOLUTELY true for you to know and EMBRACE, that whatever qualities that you would want to see in your church leadership, those are the VERY qualities that YOU YOURSELF need to nurture and exhibit in your own life as well!!

For whether you like it or not, you too are church leadership, for the Lord Himself has called you to be so! Those who have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus, who are now to be therefore, those that live a life that will help lead others to Jesus!!!

So be 1st yourself, what you want and expect other Christians to be, especially your pastors, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus!!
