Scars

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV

I recently met up with a friend who has been going through a rough time over the past year. I found myself relating to some of the hardships that he faced and shared how I had dealt with similar issues in the past. My hope was that by sharing these painful events in my life, it would provide some sort of comfort and encouragement, as well as guidance on how to navigate through the challenges that he faced. After meeting with him, as I drove home, the song “For Miles” by Thrice started playing and the chorus really stood out:

And as long as we live

Every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart

And there’s no greater love

Than that one shed his blood for his friends

The first part of the chorus reminded me of the latter part of our verse, “who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” Side note: the second part of the chorus is a reference to John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” We live in a sinful and broken world, and we have either faced hardships in life or will face hardships at some point. As we face these hardships, let us not forget that we worship the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. Just as we receive comfort from God in our time of suffering, we too can be a comfort to others. The scars from your past can be a bridge to someone’s broken heart today.
