Spiritual Warfare

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. –Ephesians 6:10-12

We are at war! And this war is for life and death!

No, this war is not with guns and tanks. No, this war is not with hand grenades or bombs. Yet, this war is the most critical war that most of us have been through in our lifetimes.

Many of us are not aware that behind everything that goes on in the world today is a greater cosmic and spiritual reality. Yet, we are in the midst of spiritual warfare. Our passage today reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but rather it is a battle against the spiritual forces in the heavenly realms.

Behind the global pandemic, there is a demonic spirit of disease and plague. Alongside that demon are the demons of the sense of failure and defeat, depression, and economic hardships, and even indifference and ignorance. Behind the political affairs of the world are the spirits of pride, division, secularism, and nationalism. Please be aware that these are not just descriptions of some of the symptoms of the world’s troubles, but these are real demons that are trying to bring us down. These are the enemies that are not seen, but are real.

Our Fall Life Group semester will began in about a month, and I’ve been working hard to prepare for this new semester. One of the first things I’m doing is rallying the troops. I’m reaching out to each and every life group leader to encourage them and to get them on board. This past semester was tough for many leaders and members, because we had to try to conduct life groups through virtual formats, and in many ways it was just very difficult. And so it’s more important than ever to rally the leaders in a spirit of unity.

And the main battle cry is that we need to come together in spiritual unity as God’s army to fight off the enemy in this spiritual warfare! And this is not just for the life group leaders, but for everyone who is part of the church of Jesus Christ! We need to come together in love and unity for one another. We need to pray in all circumstances for all of God’s people! We need to come together physically and spiritually!

But the most important thing is to know that God is already fighting for us! In fact, God is already victorious, but not in the way we may expect. God is victorious in His sacrifice and death on the cross! The victory is already ours, for those who are in Christ Jesus!

So let’s come together as God’s army this week, knowing that we have the ultimate victory in our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross this week!
