Take a Moment to Choose

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Romans 8:5-8

Every day we have a choice. We can choose to take matters into our own hands and live out our desires or we can choose to follow the Spirit and allow Him to direct us. As Christians, we may sometimes feel a tension between our desires and submitting to God, but I believe it’s only because we are forgetting (or choosing to ignore) the reality that every desire we have that is good comes from God and He desires it for us, too! Desires that are not good, will only lead to division, pain, and death. Submitting our hearts to God’s law frees us from the burden of trying to make something good with our own hands. Instead, we can learn and participate in how things are done in God’s eternal reality. It is definitely the better way.

Every day I pray we take the time to choose God and choose to live in the Spirit rather than in the flesh. Rather than simply going with our instincts or doing what’s safe, take a moment to remember the presence of the Spirit and choose to follow Him. It may seem risky but the Spirit is eternal and the flesh leads to death.
