The Father’s Heart

John 1:1-2, 14
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”

Our third child Miles was sick a few days ago so I got to spend the whole day alone with him while Heather took our older kids out for a day trip. With three children, spending 1 on 1 quality time is rare. I sometimes envy parents who have one child because I see how much special attention that child gets. Recently, we’ve been trying to be more intentional about spending quality 1 on 1 time with each of our kids and they truly love the experience, never wanting our special time to end.

Heather shared her thoughts about John 1:1 a few days ago. What must have it been like to enjoy eternal communion with the Father? Jesus had this special bond with the Father. And yet the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. Imagine how hard it must have been for the Father to share his Son with us, knowing what must happen to make us all sons and daughters.

It’s a great reminder for all of us to learn to let go. Love by its very nature is meant to be shared; it cannot be contained. There will come a time when my kids will look up to others and find other best friends other than their daddy. When that day comes, I hope I’ll love them enough to let them make their choice. Finding a tight small group or community is great but there will come a time when we need to let others in and let others go so that they can be a blessing in another group. Let us value all the special relationships in our life but may we never hoard over them with jealousy. Let’s remember the love of the Father who let us in and shared with us the gift of his Son.
