The Narrow Way

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Matthew 7:13-20

With every passing year I realize again and again that we just don’t know what the future holds. There are always things we won’t know about others and things will happen that we didn’t anticipate. I like to plan things and feel prepared but I have to admit, I’m never actually fully ready. I suppose most people do not want to face pain and we fear the unknown. This is why false realities can appear so attractive. It’s easy to be convinced that things actually can be easy and pain can be avoided because that is what we hope for.

But what is the humble truth is that we are all broken and in need of help and we are all afraid because we know we cannot save ourselves and make everything right. We know struggles and pain lie ahead of us in our own lives and in the lives of those we love. We can either search for a True Savior or choose to live in an alternate reality that says we can figure this out on our own and create happiness on our own. After all, this is what everyone else is doing and they seem to be doing great! Why not live in pursuit of money so you can buy anything you want? or Why not simply find true love because only then will you feel fulfilled, or How about pursuing freedom to do whatever you choose and then you won’t be tied down to the burdens of the world or How about simply pursuing physical beauty? Beautiful people seem to receive the most attention and love. These others ways of life seem to satisfy human needs to some extent but the result of living in these false realities is bondage to actually accomplish these things and too often we hurt one another to achieve these goals. We seem to try and find an excuse for not needing Jesus when in fact we truly need him for everything and none of the other realities are truly satisfying because ultimately, they cannot save us.

Lately, I’ve been reminded, again, that choosing Jesus every morning, at every cross road, at every point of decision is staying on the narrow way and that is what is staying on path. Compromising here and there and allowing ourselves to buy into false truths that contradict what Jesus taught slowly makes the way wider and wider and before we realize it, we are no longer walking on a narrow path. It has become big and widened by many other ways of life where we haven’t even noticed that we aren’t following Jesus’ way at all anymore.

Scripture says it’s easy to get lost and it’s tempting to trade in Truth for falsehood. We’re all capable of it. So let’s be a community that reminds one another of the beauty and joy of following Jesus and staying on the narrow way every day.  It’s a path where we give our burdens to Christ and He promises to renew our minds and make things right for the world! Money isn’t something we have to strive for because we have an awesome Provider. Love is not something we have to long for because Jesus loved us first and unconditionally. Freedom is not something we have to pursue because it was given to us from the beginning and beauty is something we already received when our Maker created us in our mother’s womb.

Christ be with you this week!
With love.
