Weekly Devotion: The Proposition

1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above,
where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things
that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your
life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then
you also will appear with him in glory. – Colossians 3:1-4

There was once a very successful
business man who went on vacation to a remote island, where there was no phone
or wifi connection. Every morning he would get up early and hire one of the
locals to take him out on his boat and go fishing. They would return before
noon with a great catch of some of the most delicious fish, and they would grill
it over a fire and eat it together with the fisherman’s wife and all of his

On the last day of the vacation the
business man was so grateful for the experience that he made a business proposition
to the local fisherman.

Man: Tell me friend, what is a typical day for you like?

Well I get up at the break of dawn, and I cast off in my boat, and I go
fishing. I bring home what I can, share it with my family and friends, and we
have a wonderful meal together. I take a nap in the afternoon, and then I
prepare my nets in the afternoon and evenings so I can go out and do it all
over again the next day.

BM: That
sounds like a tough life.

FM: It can

BM: Well, I’d
like to help you so you can make lots of money from your fishing, and become a
very rich man. Would you like that?

FM: That
sounds great! But what would I do with lots of money?

BM: You
could do whatever you want.

FM: I’ve
never thought about it.

BM: Well,
you could stop working and retire early. Then, you could move to a wonderful
tropical place somewhere… perhaps by the beach. And you can do anything that
your heart desires, like going fishing all day and feasting with your family
and friends all the time without a worry in the world.

FM: That
sounds great! But why do I need your help to do something I already do?

We are often so caught up in the
race of the world that we don’t realize that we are frantically running in
circles. When we set our minds of the things of above, the things of Christ, we
begin to look at the world around us much differently. The cross of Christ
redeems all things, including the world. The kingdom of God is not meant to be
a mysterious other-worldly place, but when we let Christ reign in our lives, we
are already living in God’s kingdom, which is in heaven, but also here on

Let’s take some time this week to
get off the hamster treadmill that we run on so hard and offer ourselves up to
Christ, so he can present us into this world in the fullness of his glory.
Perhaps if you look around, you will see that in Christ you already have everything
that you really need.

Have a blessed week in the Lord!
