We Lack No Good Thing

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!  Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack! The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing (Psalm 34: 8-10)

As the year comes to an end, I always find myself looking back at the year and taking a moment to reflect. This is an exercise that allows us to see God’s hand at work in our lives, but what do we do when we don’t see? Have you ever felt that God responded with nothing but silence to your prayers? I’ve found myself in this place many times, and have been frustrated or disappointed many times. But I pull myself out of this pit because then I remember:

God is good.

This is something we hear all the time. But something that appears fundamentally simple is in reality a difficult for us to fully grasp.  But I would also say that seeking to grasp this truth is paramount to the life of faith.

I recently met up with a friend and the conversation took me back to a time where I struggled a lot to understand this truth. My years in seminary were particularly challenging when it came to finances. In moments where I found myself literally down to my last dollar, God provided for me in amazing and unexpected ways. I had gone through seasons of struggling but God always provided for me in tangible ways. I found myself barely scraping by month after month, and I felt alone. I was constantly anxious, stressed, tired and discouraged. But most of all I was frustrated and disappointed because I was not receiving tangible responses to my prayers. God then reminded me that even though I struggled I had never gone hungry nor without a roof over my head. Even in His silence He was working and I had to trust that even when I can’t see, He is good to me.

In other ways we can find ourselves in a pit of discouragement over health, family, relationships, our future, etc., but this is when we have to remind ourselves that the Lord is indeed good.

Psalm 34 says that “those who seek the Lord, lack no good thing.” Meaning that whatever season we find ourselves in, we need to place our faith in the truth that God is good to us at all times. In other words, the Lord never withholds all that is good from us. The problem is that we tend to believe that we know what is good for us and when don’t receive it, we doubt His goodness over our lives.

As Christmas approaches whenever we find ourselves doubting God, I pray we can remind ourselves of the fullest expression of God’s goodness manifested in the form of a baby lying in a manger. As we remember Christ let us remember that God is good all the time.
