We Should Know Better

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better.”  – Ephesians 1:17

The first time I remember learning that religious practice should be refocused into a personal relationship with God, I felt as though the Jesus I had heard of (in one of my rare VBS or Sunday School appearances) was truly real and almost tangible. I went on to be challenged with the difference between “knowing about” Jesus and “knowing” Jesus.

There had to be a good reason that Paul wanted to communicate to the Ephesians that he had been like the persistent widow in knocking on the Father’s door on their behalf, so they would be filled with the Spirit and ultimately know Jesus better. We can do good things like build our theology and live right to please God, but what is it all worth if it does not lead us closer to Him–to know Him better?

There are some familiar songs that we sing together that emphasize this. (Go ahead and listen to one in a minute!):

–”Knowing You, Jesus…knowing You…there is no greater thing.”

–”I want to know You, I want to see Your face, I want to know You more”

–”And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own. And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.”

We all know that building a healthy, intimate relationship with someone takes time, effort, listening, openness, desire, sacrifice, etc, right? And now consider if this is how you are approaching your relationship with Jesus today. To give you an extra portion of encouragement, I am praying Paul’s prayer for you right now!

So, how can you receive the blessing of this prayer as I pray it for you today? In what way can you know Him better right now? Remember the sweetness of your secret times with Jesus and make it a point to meet with Him to know Him better than you did the day before!
