What Comes Out

Mark 7:14-15

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”

I love this time of the year because it naturally puts me in a headspace where I am encouraged to reflect. I usually go down a list of questions like “What good things happened this year?” “What were some not-so-good things that happened?” “What new things did I learn?” “What old things did I relearn?”

Beyond those, what I call surface-level questions, I like to challenge myself and ask deeper and more challenging questions. There are a few that I regularly ask myself, and before I share one of them, please allow me to talk a little bit about the context of the verses above.

Pharisees were constantly looking for ways to trick Jesus into contradicting himself or to catch him teaching something that may be against the Law, which they thought they knew so well, to justify their wishes to punish him.

One of the arguments that the Pharisees were trying to make was about how people should not eat certain food because it defiled them; however, in the verses above, Jesus made it very clear that it is not about the food but what is inside one’s heart.

So, with that said, here’s the question: “Is there anything that I am upholding as the “right” Christian thing to do or believe in but upon a deeper and very honest reflection, it needs a bit of correction or adjustment?”

I want all of us to take several moments during this final month of 2023 to ask ourselves challenging questions in hopes of continuing to mature mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Have a victorious week everyone!
