Where Follow Leads

(Chapter 41 from Alicia Britt Chole’s, A Sacred Slow)

“‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’” Where did we think Jesus’ invitation would lead us?

The One we follow was familiar with obscurity and waiting, betrayal and slander, injustice and rejection, and physical and emotional suffering.  Yet somehow we think that following Jesus means that we will avoid such pain.  Follow is not about scenery.  Follow is all about company.  The very things we would opt to avoid may be the unexpected friends that keep our focus on follow.

The very things that prompt us to question God’s existence may be the unexpected friends that keep us in His presence.

Where did you think Jesus’ “Follow Me” would lead you?  Bring any unexpected places in your journey into prayer and ask, God, whether or not my mind can comprehend Your response, I ask You to comfort me with the certainty of Your presence in this part of my journey.
