Yes and Amen?

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”  – Isaiah 6:8

Have you ever felt a sudden urge to do more as a Christian? There have been numerous seasons in my life where I have been so pumped and hyped to do more for God, in terms of serving or loving others around me. Many times, it came after a retreat, a seminar, an inspirational video, or an out-of-the-ordinary encounter that involved me learning something new.

After these moments or encounters, I would be riding a “spiritual high” that would last anywhere from days to months.

Regardless of the length of the highs, sometimes it was these moments that propelled me to say yes to certain opportunities that arose.

Of course, we should not commit to something simply out of feeling good or a “spiritual high”. However, I bring this up because there were many more times that I stayed silent or idle in those feelings of wanting to serve and thoughts of serving. I have felt like I wanted to serve and even voiced that I would like to serve, but my feet would not move or my mouth would not utter the words, “Yes, I will commit”.

In that way, perhaps labeling it as a “spiritual high” is not correct, but it is the very encouragement I needed in those seasons to gain the courage to say, “Yes and Amen.”

Due to God’s grace, I have been very blessed to have had many of those commitments be a time of growth and joy; this is not to say that it was all easy peasy, but definitely not a waste of my time at all.

As I ended up serving more and more, I think I slowly gained the understanding that there truly is something amazing that God does through my serving, not just those who I’m serving but in me. He revealed that it is not about me. I am not the important one. But that God is and that God loves those that I am serving and He loves me so much that during a particular season He decides to use me.

So, I ask you, brothers and sisters, do you feel there’s a pull in your heart to serve in this particular season? Perhaps there’s someone to love or a need to fill at work, school, church, or home? I pray that you take some time this week to pray and ask that God opens up your eyes and ears to see and hear of anyone or any need around you so that your mouth and heart are able to say, “Yes and Amen” to committing to love and serve.
