James 1:22-25

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

The book of James is a favorite of many because of it’s straight forward approach to things. Deep, true, and much needed theology is unpacked for us in simple, easy to understand statements. The passage for this devotion is certainly no exception.

Verse 22 states that we should not just listen to the word but to do what it says. What does this mean?? Well, this means that… we should not just listen to the word but to do what it says! Ha! You see??!! Deep, true, and necessary theology is presented to us in a manner where it would take more effort to misunderstand what is being said, than to understand it.

Yes brothers and sisters, God’s words are not to be just heard, or just read, or just known, but ultimately, to be obeyed. To hear, read, and know the words of the One who made the heavens and the earth, the words of One who loves us so much to die on the cross for our sins to rise again on the 3rd day, the words of the One, the ONLY ONE, who can give us true life and freedom, BUT NOT OBEY THEM??? Well, that’s just plain ridiculous.

That’s why James says what he says in verses 23-24. To not obey God’s words is as ridiculous as someone looking into a mirror, seeing themselves, but then immediately forgetting what they look like as soon as they walk away. This scenario just makes no sense whatsoever. It is simply foolish. In fact, as our passage states, it is actually a matter of deception. Satan, the enemy of God and man is working as hard a he can to make us “forget what we look like,” to have us not obey God’s words.

And this is all the more a bad situation, when you realize that the point of this priority of obedience, is only so that those who obey can be blessed to experience the abundance of God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will for their lives, as opposed to otherwise having to live in the shackles of Satan’s sinful deceptions that results only in death.

So in light of this truth, here is my encouragement to you; I would like to encourage everyone that anytime and every time you read/hear God’s word, look not only for theological insights and the like, BUT ESPECIALLY for something to obey!

This is a discipline that I try to practice in my own personal time in God’s word. Though I am always looking for fresh perspectives and insights, I am also looking to find just one word of direction to focus on obeying for that day; in a sense, my God-given, daily assignment for the day

String some days, and then some weeks, and then some months of time together in God’s word where you are focused on doing this, and I GUARANTEE that you will be blessed by the Lord in ways you could not have imagined! And I am more than confident that I can boldly declare this as a guarantee because this is something that God Himself guarantees in verse 25 of our passage! ^^

So let’s do this brothers and sisters! May our devotional times be also times of getting our daily assignments from the Lord!

PTL! And Let this be so!!!

With all my heart.
